The Queensland Youth Detention Class Action will aim to compensate Individuals who were held as juveniles in custodial facilities and who were subject to the following practices:
- Long periods of ‘separation’ either in cell or in a purpose built ‘separation room’; and
- Lack of access to education and/or vocational training; and
- Lack of access to meaningful out of cell time, including outdoor recreation; and
- Lack of access to phone calls and/or visits with family; and
- Excessive uses of force by custodial staff; and
- Harassment (verbal or physical) by custodial staff and/or peers; and/or
- Strip-searches which were routine, punitive and/or ‘full’ strip searches (those which require the young person to remove all their clothes at once).

We know that many prisoners are suffering because of long wait times to see a doctor, a nurse, or a dentist, while others have been diagnosed with serious conditions – including Hep C, Cancer, and HIV – for which they have received inadequate, or no, treatment and care.
Examples of inadequate medical care may include:
- Long wait times to see a doctor, a nurse, or a dentist; and
- Lack of access to diagnostic assessments (blood tests, scans, X-Rays); and
- Inadequate or ineffective treatment and/or lack of follow up care; and
- Lack of information regarding conditions, treatment, care; and
- Lack of information regarding practical strategies to manage health risks and their resultant harm; and/or
- Lack of appropriate treatment and care for those with serious health conditions including but not limited to Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Cancer, and HIV.
